According to Mark Twain, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” When it comes to the spread of misinformation about voluntary euthanasia law reform, truer words have never been spoken.
At a public forum on voluntary euthanasia hosted by the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties on September 19th, I was left disappointed when my opponent in the debate, Mr Yuri Koszarycz, stated categorically but with no identified source, that “the Council of Europe has banned euthanasia.”
Like a number of other statements he made on the day, this is simply untrue. (See my previous blog for more.)
I wondered, how does an intelligent man with multiple university degrees find himself misinforming the public with a statement he could, so easily, have verified as false? The answer is a motley one indeed.
