A study of the effects of legalising assisted dying on the provision of good palliative care has just been reported in the British Medical Journal. The multi-country research was conducted on behalf of the UK’s independent Commission on Assisted Dying which is chaired by former Lord Chancellor Charles Falconer.

Mr Neil Francis, CEO of aid-in-dying law reform group YourLastRight.com, said “Some palliative care specialists in Australia worry that legalisation of assisted dying for the terminally ill would damage the funding and practice of palliative care.”

This afternoon, a motion put to the Victorian Legislative Council by Colleen Hartland, Greens member for Western Metropolitan, was defeated 16/19. Hartland’s motion was to ask the Attorney General, Robert Clark, to refer the matter of dying with dignity to the Victorian Law Reform Committee for full community consultation.
